Learning new words

You should develop methods to learn the meanings of new words you encounter in the textbook, in this study guide, on the podcast exercises, in class and with other speakers. One quick way to do this is to use small cards with the new word on one side of the card and the meaning on the other. By having each word on a separate card, you can go through a set of cards by looking at and saying each word while thinking of its meaning. Each card can be sorted into two piles, one for those words you know the meanings of and another for those you do not know. Then you can repeat the process with the words you did not know the meanings of. You can also reverse the process and look at the side of the cards with the meanings instead.

These cards are easy to carry with you. They should be kept for future revision.

You may also wish to create your own dictionary. Whenever you encounter a new word you add it to your dictionary with its meaning. It is suggested that you use illustrations and sentences with the words in them as examples to help you remember their meanings and how they are used.
