He whakamārama
In the last exercise for Te wāhanga tuarima of this study guide the position of modifiers, and in particular adjectives, was discussed and practised. A modifier adds further information about the word that precedes it. In the same way, clauses may be used to modify a noun, e.g. Koia nei te wāhi i tū ai te tōtara. (This is the place where the tōtara tree stood.) In this example, the underlined part adds information about wāhi (place) and is a relative clause.
This type of relative clause is explained on page120 of Te Kākano and the following exercise gives you practice in its use.
Whakakotahitia ngā rerenga kōrero e rua.
