Saying 'also'

Anō hoki

Ngā Tohutohu

One of the several variations in meaning for hoki is to say ‘also’. Do not confuse this hoki with hoki(-a) which is an ordinary verb meaning to return. Hoki meaning ‘also’ or ‘too’ comes in a different position in the phrase. In fact it is always last in the phrase following all other particles. Frequently it is used with anō for the same meaning.

Hei tauira:

I haere hoki ahau ki te whare o Hariata. I also went to Hariata’s house.
He rā paki, he rā mahana hoki tēnei. This is a sunny and also a warm day.
I ākina anō hoki rātou kia hoki atu ki te kura. They were also encouraged to return to school.
