I hea? Where was/were?

You have already learnt that i is used to indicate past location. There is a clear difference between kei and i in the following examples.

    Hei tauira

I hea rāua? Where were they?
I te tāone rāua. They were in town.
Kei hea rāua? Where are they.
Kei te tāone rāua. They are in town.

 

I hea tana koti?             Where was her coat?
I runga i te turu. On the chair.
Kei hea tana koti? Where is her coat?
Kei runga i te tūru. It's on the chair.
